Making a left turn at an intersection when?

I have put the car in park, stepped out and walked back to the other car. People tell me, this will get me shot. I guess the best thing is to just sit there until it is safe, and ignore the ignorant, The problem is the person across from you can not see much either, so you are both stuck there, blocking each other;s view.
