Maintaining nice cuticles WITHOUT trimming?

I am sick of trimming my cuticles every week. Sometimes my nails look really scraggly if I don't trim them on time. Any suggestions? special hand creams? I don't know what the options are. They said to push the cuticles back but pushing them back only makes them looked "all backed-up"? Thank you.
