Subungal (sp) hematoma toenail help?!?!?

My bf had dropped a dumbbell on his toe and hours later it was completely black and the pressure was so bad he could hardly drive . The drilled a hole to drain it and a few days later the blood stopped draining through said holes and pressure began building behind the cuticle and so we went back and they poem a hole in the skin and tons of black bloo came out but now that pocket sorta holds liquid n its developing a smeLl but it doesn't hurt other than if he pushes on the nail and moves it since ot is still hanging on by a bit of meat...I just want to know if you think the smell sounds normal since liquid is being trapped in there a bit...
